And here's why. It's ***-Agra's thing to seek out superior, well made and well reviewed, customer appreciated products and buy the company that produces them.

After that, they turn the product into a dung heap by making it cheaper to produce. This process saves them money and gives them a free ride, for a few years. Later, when people find out that they have been had, ***-Agra is running in the black on this particular acquisition, so they don't care. There is no difference between this and a myriad of other food products on the market.

***-Agra is nothing more than a parasite. In times past, butchers used to put their thumb on the scale to add a little pressure and, thereby, displaying a little extra weight and collect an extra dime. Now the M.O. is to add water to products to increase the weight and try to justify it by claiming that it makes the product better.

Chicken and pork are really great examples - you pay meat prices for water! ***-Agra is not the only guilty party. A great rip-off example is Van De Camps and Gorton's. The picture on the box of their fish sticks has absolutely no relation to what is really in the box.

It's false advertising, plain and simple. And, nothing is done about it. Why? It's because the people who make the laws pertaining to this kind of thing collect a few dollars by turning a blind eye.

Another interesting case is Kroger, owner of Ralph's Market in So. Cal. Kroger has been cited by the the United State's Attorney Generals office more times than you would care to imagine re: Ralph's. Do a Google search for crying out loud.

Kroger owns about 3500 stores with assorted names, by the way. The result? A slap on the wrist and a fine so small that it is considered less pocket change. You want more?

Try Food Lion (look it up - it's in the past) - out and out fraud. You, dear reader, are the consumer and it is your job to take it up the *** and not complain. I've gone toe to toe with some of these people and they don't give a squat about the consumer. I tell store managers that their parent company has no integrity and, because they work for them, they also have no integrity either.

Do they care? Of course not, they need a job, at whatever the cost to others. I could go on for another ten thousand words, chastising Safeway, Albertson's, Market of Choice, yeah, even Trader Joe's (but they are pretty good). BUT, what the ***.

Let's talk about "Bateman." I'm sure you have never heard of them. Bateman does "MEALS ON WHEELS" for homebound seniors as well as supply lunch meals to senior centers throughout the country. I think they do lowest bidder contracts for any institution that does not have kitchen facilities. The suggested donation from the seniors is $3.

Good grief, the meal isn't even worth $0.50. They ought to be in jail. I am 74 years old and have probably eaten 50,000 meals in my lifetime, 4 years worth in the military, and I can say without fear of contradiction that the Bateman meals are among the worst food I have ever had. It may be nutritionally viable but the taste sucks, I could prepare better meals while in a coma.

I have had many of these meals in the past several months, often bringing some of my own ingredients. No help. You cannot make a silk purse out of a sows ear, so they say. I've talked to many of the seniors that eat these meals and they come to the lunches for just a taste of companionship, not the food.

Many admit that the food sucks but, sadly, many think it's OK. I don't get it - I could make a decent meal from lawn clippings. I think I'll quit here.

Or, should I? Do YOU have a relative that gets "meals on wheels" or eats at one of these senior centers and do you wonder why they are so morose?
